Apparently there is a conservative organization called Let Freedom Ring that is promoting a $4 billion "state-of-the-art border fence" between the U.S. and Mexico.
www.weneedafence.comthey claim that we need the fence for various reasons including:
- we have to spend our tax money to take care of them/get rid of them
- terrorists are coming across the border as well
regarding terrorists, factcheck actually shows that our northern border might be of greater concern, and that in fact the 9/11 hijackers all had visas. so, what terrorists would a southern fence prevent?
www.factcheck.org/article352.htmlalso, what about immigrants "sneaking in" on boats, in crates, with falsified identification on flights from yet other countries?
this sounds to me like a rather blind-sided and self-serving proposal. I was speaking to my friend at work about it and she adds that many immigrants crossing the southern border die while trying to get through the desert there. Most of them are coming for a better life. To really prevent an immigrant from trying to escape the poverty in his/her own country why not propose that $4 billion be spent on improving life in those parts of the world from which immigrants originate? Hit the root of the problem.
Of course, there is going to be a certain percentage of immigrants that are dangerous criminals and those will probably try to come too. But criminals will show up in any population and should be treated as an *exception* not a characteristic, of the immigrant population.
